PA, paging and intercom systems for aged care and retirement villages

Planning a aged-care-home PA upgrade, retirement-village announcement system or entrance intercom? Compare the systems against the job you need done: reaching the right areas, answering visitors, supporting staff and keeping everyday communication easy to manage.

Compare Axis, 2N, Algo, TOA and Bosch PROSPERO, with SPON and FrontRow treated conditionally, for common areas, visitor access and general two-way calling. The right shortlist changes with the brief, and specialist nurse call is explained separately.

Start with the job, not the logo

Which system belongs on your aged-care or retirement-village shortlist?

There is no single winner. A retirement village choosing entrance/video communication has a different shortlist from a care facility replacing its PA, and both differ from a site wanting one integrated PA + intercom platform.

Define the system before the brand

PA, staff paging and nurse call are different jobs

A search for “aged-care paging systems” can mean loudspeaker announcements, private messages to staff, or a resident’s call for assistance. Specify which you need. Specialist nurse-call and staff-notification systems go beyond a general PA/intercom quote and should be scoped separately.

PA and announcements

Live or scheduled audio to chosen common areas, staff areas or outdoor locations. This is the main cost/comparison scope here.

Entrance and general intercom

Two-way communication with a defined answering point. Quote visitor video, access hardware and optional room calling explicitly.

Nurse call and staff alerts

Resident assistance, pendants, call escalation or staff-device alerts need a separately specified response system—not just a speaker with a microphone.

Independent village, residential care or a mixed site?

Australian Government guidance describes residential aged care as a service type. Our planning recommendation is to identify the actual service and operator rather than treating all retirement housing as the same: an independent-living village may prioritise entrances and shared spaces; a care facility needs its care-response systems scoped alongside general PA; a mixed village should identify where the systems connect and where they remain separate.

Evidence:[19]

An emergency-announcement function is also not proof that a product meets a required fire/evacuation specification. Keep that engineered scope separate. Unsure which system you are asking for? .

The system behind the brand

Detailed platform comparison and Australian evidence

Compare the actual product family and the supported design. An Australian listing establishes a route for enquiry, not guaranteed stock, nationwide service or a care-sector market share.

Axis

Audio Manager Edge, C6110 and compatible network audio / intercom

Browser-managed network audio

Strong first look for browser-managed audio, two-way console operation and security convergence

Edge puts zoning, schedules and health monitoring inside compatible audio devices, with browser-based administration. The C6110 console adds reception paging and supported two-way communication; the I8116-E extends the family to visitor video at entrances, and the C8110 bridges retained analogue audio into the design.

Evidence:[1][2][3][4]

Where it earns its place

  • Well-documented browser workflow for zones, schedules and health checks is a useful administration benchmark.
  • Network audio, paging console, video intercom and security/access integration can be designed as one environment.
  • C8110 bridging allows suitable retained analogue speaker circuits to be reused in a staged design.

Trade-offs to check

  • Edge's documented 200-device / 20-zone limit is about management zones, not speakers; larger estates need the appropriate management design first.
  • Day-to-day simplicity is not a substitute for demonstrating term changes, calling and outage behaviour on the proposed configuration.
  • Entrance video and door-control work are separate purchases that need their own quoting discipline.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

Axis publishes Australian-facing audio and intercom pages. Those establish manufacturer information, not a care-sector installation, local stock or every-state service coverage.

Evidence:[5]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
Edge on compatible devices; C6110 console where reception paging/calling is required.
Representative paging / audio
Selected indoor/outdoor Axis speakers; C8110 plus a suitable amplifier for retained 100V lines.
General room/staff intercom
C6110 with compatible two-way endpoints, configured and demonstrated.
Entrance / video provision
I8116-E network video intercom with door-release and receiving arrangement designed explicitly.
Where value comes from
Included Edge management and reuse of an existing Axis environment can reduce extra system components.
What to confirm in the quote
Price the actual speaker mix, console, entrance hardware and any larger-site management tier separately.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[1][2][3][4][5]

2N

IP Verso 2.0 and the chosen receiving / access-control system

Entrance and access intercom

Consider for an entrance, gate and visitor-access-led brief

IP Verso 2.0 is a modular entrance-intercom platform. For a care facility or village, specify the visitor answering location, after-hours arrangements and access-control interface. This is not a clinical call-response or whole-site PA specification.

Evidence:[6]

Where it earns its place

  • An entrance-focused product family provides a starting point for visitor communication.
  • Manufacturer product information and an Australian wholesaler category are available for enquiry.

Trade-offs to check

  • A door intercom is not a site-wide PA system; paging must come from a different design.
  • Keep current entrance products separate from legacy Net Audio, which 2N places in discontinued-product support.
  • The Italian retirement/rehabilitation case study is workflow evidence, not proof of the same revision or installation in Australia.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

advanceNET publishes a 2N category in Australia. Confirm the exact product revision, warranty and installation support; a listing is not proof of a care-sector deployment.

Evidence:[7]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
IP Verso 2.0 with the required reader/button/camera modules.
Representative paging / audio
Not a paging platform; use alongside a PA design where announcements are needed.
General room/staff intercom
Configured receiving arrangement: reception station, resident handset/app workflow or answering service.
Entrance / video provision
Core of the design; include door hardware, accessibility and after-hours routing.
Where value comes from
Deep entrance/access specialisation rather than broad paging coverage.
What to confirm in the quote
Price modules, door hardware, receiving stations, licences and any access-control integration, not just the door panel.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[6][7]

Algo

8301 adapter / scheduler and compatible SIP endpoints

SIP-first and hybrid migration

Consider when retaining suitable PA equipment or planning a SIP-linked upgrade.

The 8301 connects IP paging and scheduling to a compatible analogue amplifier and provides local scheduling without a cloud dependency. Selected endpoints, including the 8188 ceiling speaker with its accessory call button options, add two-way audio where required.

Evidence:[8][9]

Where it earns its place

  • The 8301 is both a bell/announcement scheduler and a migration interface for existing amplifiers.
  • Staged migration: new IP areas and retained analogue circuits can be considered together.
  • An Australian product listing provides a supply enquiry starting point; confirm whole-system support.

Trade-offs to check

  • A gateway cannot give individual-room control to speakers sharing one undivided analogue circuit.
  • General talkback endpoints do not supply a clinical call-response workflow.
  • The complete staff workflow across scheduler, telephony and accessories still needs designing.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

advanceNET publishes Australian education solutions that include Algo IP paging and bell products. Ask the proposed provider to confirm support for the whole design rather than just the adapter.

Evidence:[10]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
8301 scheduler/adapter; add console and management only where the brief requires them.
Representative paging / audio
8188 indoor PoE speaker, suitable outdoor horn and the retained amplifier interface.
General room/staff intercom
8188 talkback with compatible call accessories, or a separate dedicated intercom design.
Entrance / video provision
Confirm exact package; not an entrance-specialist ecosystem.
Where value comes from
Can retain existing PA infrastructure and avoid a large central server for basic scheduled paging.
What to confirm in the quote
Include call accessories, mounting, any console and optional management licences.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[8][9][10]

TOA

N-8000 intercom; IP-A1 network PA where appropriate

Dedicated audio intercom and network PA

Consider where dedicated audio intercom architecture is central

N-8000 is a dedicated intercom family with calling and paging. It merits attention when staff/room audio stations are the central requirement. For a SIP-first PA design, IP-A1 provides gateways and interfaces; the IP-A1PG adds web scheduling. The families are distinct architectures that must be designed deliberately.

Evidence:[11][12][13]

Where it earns its place

  • Dedicated intercom requirements can be assessed against a purpose-built station architecture.
  • IP-A1PG adds a documented scheduler with browser scheduling.
  • Interfaces and amplifiers support genuinely hybrid site designs.

Trade-offs to check

  • An audio-only N-8000 door station is not a like-for-like replacement for a video-entry system.
  • Interoperability and limits need checking for the specific combination of families and endpoints.
  • Confirm Australian supply and support for the exact parts in the proposal.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

TOA's own authorised-dealer page identifies Australis Music Group in Australia. Confirm local availability, product revision and support for the actual N-8000 or IP-A1 proposal.

Evidence:[14]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
IP-A1PG for IP-A1 scheduling designs, or an N-8000 exchange for dedicated intercom designs.
Representative paging / audio
IP-A1 speakers/horns and interface-fed amplifiers for passive zones.
General room/staff intercom
N-8000 master and sub-stations designed for staff/room communication.
Entrance / video provision
Audio-only door stations where video is not required.
Where value comes from
Mature dedicated-audio-intercom depth without needing a video-led ecosystem.
What to confirm in the quote
Do not price an N-8000 exchange or voice-alarm rack as mandatory for a simpler IP-A1 design, or vice versa.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[11][12][13][14]

SPON

PA / intercom family; local delivery to verify

Conditional: Australian support unverified

Only investigate further after confirming a credible Australian supply/support route.

SPON describes paging and intercom functions in its manufacturer school solution. A care-site application needs a separate operational design, exact product verification and documented Australian supply/support. This is not evidence of clinical nurse-call capability or an Australian care installation.

Evidence:[20]

Where it earns its place

  • Manufacturer information is available as a starting point for a technical enquiry.
  • A written scope can test whether one platform could cover the required general functions.

Trade-offs to check

  • Australian supply, warranty and local support have not been verified in this review.
  • Care workflows, privacy controls and any clinical systems require separate specification.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

Australian supply/support not verified. No manufacturer link below is being presented as Australian distributor evidence.

Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
Confirm the proposed server/controller, licences and current supported software.
Representative paging / audio
Confirm exact indoor/outdoor endpoints and the required coverage design.
General room/staff intercom
Confirm microphones, call controls, answering points and permissions.
Entrance / video provision
Confirm the specific entrance device and access interface before specifying it.
Where value comes from
Potential consolidation should be assessed only after support and compatibility are established.
What to confirm in the quote
Do not infer a price advantage from overseas components or broad family claims.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[20]

Bosch PROSPERO

PROSPERO software, PRP-CST and audio / amplifier interfaces

Browser-managed IP PA

Worth quoting for managed common-area announcements

PROSPERO is not only a school-bell platform. The Australian manufacturer page positions it for medium-sized commercial sites, with browser/server control, scheduled tasks, paging and amplifier interfaces. That gives it a credible role in shared lounges, reception and other common areas.

Evidence:[17]

Where it earns its place

  • Web-managed scheduling and zoned paging fit common-area announcement workflows.
  • Amplifier interfaces support passive-speaker zones in larger shared spaces.
  • Current Australian-facing product page gives a local enquiry route.

Trade-offs to check

  • The call station's zone-monitoring speaker is not proof of room talkback.
  • Establish any two-way requirement separately from the core package.
  • Do not infer certified evacuation suitability from an emergency function.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

Keenfinity maintains an Australian PROSPERO product page. Check the current locally supplied package and support arrangements.

Evidence:[18]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
PROSPERO software licence on the required host, with PRP-CST call station(s).
Representative paging / audio
IP endpoints and/or interface modules feeding suitable amplifiers and passive speakers.
General room/staff intercom
Specify separately; quote a documented room-calling solution if required.
Entrance / video provision
Confirm exact package; no visitor-video family established for this brief.
Where value comes from
Managed PA/scheduling depth without paying for specialist voice-alarm architecture.
What to confirm in the quote
Price software licence, host, call stations and one endpoint/interface per required zone; PROSPERO and PRAESENSA are different systems.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[17][18]

FrontRow

Conductor with compatible classroom / room-audio systems

Room-audio-led campus communications

Conditional fit where its room-audio ecosystem is already useful

Conductor combines campus paging, schedules and intercom with compatible room audio. It remains worth assessing where FrontRow is already installed or a training/activity-room audio requirement is important alongside announcements.

Evidence:[15]

Where it earns its place

  • A coherent workflow joins room audio, announcements and intercom where that ecosystem is already valuable.
  • FrontRow maintains an official Australian contact and product route.

Trade-offs to check

  • A classroom-led ecosystem is not the default starting point for a new care-only brief; that is a fit judgement, not a capability claim.
  • Compare the required functions rather than buying classroom features by default.

Australian market fit / local ecosystem

FrontRow publishes Conductor information on its Australian site. A care application is conditional on an existing operational need for that ecosystem; no Australian care-sector deployment is established here.

Evidence:[16]
Design detail: endpoints, controls and quote scope
Core / control
Conductor server, licences and administrative station.
Representative paging / audio
Compatible room interfaces; amplifier connections for common areas.
General room/staff intercom
Compatible room microphone/call interface quoted separately.
Entrance / video provision
Confirm exact package; not a specialist entrance ecosystem.
Where value comes from
Attractive where existing or new FrontRow room audio is genuinely useful.
What to confirm in the quote
Separate room voice amplification/AV control from the essential campus PA price.

These are a quoting framework and component examples, not a complete bill of materials or an assurance of cross-family compatibility.

Evidence:[15][16]

When the brief changes

Specialist and alternative architectures

Traditional 100V / hybrid

Keep a simple amplifier-and-speaker proposal in the comparison for modest one-way announcements, and ask what can be retained before choosing a full IP replacement.

AtlasIED

Enterprise/mass-notification scope needs its own current product and Australian delivery review. Do not infer a care-sector recommendation from the brand name alone.

Bosch PRAESENSA

Investigate separately when a supervised public-address / voice-alarm design is an actual engineering requirement. PRAESENSA and PROSPERO are different systems; capabilities do not transfer between them.

FrontRow

Conditional where an existing FrontRow room-audio environment or a specialised activity/training-room audio requirement makes its ecosystem relevant to the wider project.

Design around people

What should the installer demonstrate?

Our suggested acceptance brief is based on staff tasks rather than a generic speaker count. Include your care, facilities and IT teams where the scope crosses their responsibilities.

The right places, not every room

Page a lounge, a staff area and the outdoor space separately. Agree whether resident bedrooms receive routine announcements at all; do not use bed count as an automatic speaker quantity.

Quiet hours and clear speech

Demonstrate the routine timetable, message priority and authorised overrides. Include hearing-accessibility needs in the brief rather than assuming more volume solves them.

Calls that reach someone

Show who answers an entrance or general intercom call, what happens when reception is busy and the after-hours arrangement. Clinical escalation remains a separate nurse-call requirement.

Recovery and ongoing support

Test internet, local-server, network-switch and power failures separately. Specify backups, software responsibility, replacement lead times and a supported upgrade path.

For microphone-equipped devices, agree who can initiate a call, where audio is heard and whether any recording is proposed. For network planning, use the IP paging network-readiness checklist.

A useful starting budget

What could an aged-care PA and intercom upgrade cost?

The SiteComms calculator can model the general paging and optional intercom part of the project. Start with the actual rooms and outdoor areas that need coverage, then adjust calling and other options. It is not a per-bed price or a quotation for the entire care-communications system.

Illustrative common-area project · not a real installation

Six small indoor areas, one large lounge, one outdoor area and one voice-entry point

Assumes suitable existing data cabling, the Essential package, no room-call buttons and no monitoring service. These are eight audio coverage areas plus an entrance—not nine speakers or nine software zones. The calculator applies its normal speaker-quantity assumptions.

$9,664–$12,080AUD, excluding GST · indicative installed planning range

Calculated from the existing SiteComms model, including its central-platform and installation allowances. It is not a measured multi-brand average or a promise of a provider quote at this price. Different architectures and site conditions can fall outside it.

Not included: site-wide cabling, a clinical nurse-call/pendant system, a complete door/access-control project or an engineered fire/evacuation system. Those require their own scope. Confirm network capacity, installation access and any additional works.

Existing 100V equipment may change the best approach substantially. The calculator models a particular new-system scope; a hybrid-reuse quote may be different. Read the pricing assumptions and exclusions, or .

Payment options

Finance and leasing for a village communications upgrade

A financing discussion should begin with the actual legal borrower and its authority to contract. Equipment, installation costs, security, term and ownership need assessment by a qualified provider. This phase has not validated lender eligibility for Australian aged-care operators.

The SiteComms check asks for a little project and budget context; it does not approve finance, quote repayments or reject an enquiry because the deposit or budget is uncertain. You can request the next step at every result level.

Check researched funding pathways for care and community projects. The checker distinguishes residential aged care from retirement-village operation and flags restricted or unverified routes; it does not approve eligibility or award money.

This is commercial equipment planning for the organisation, not residential-care subsidy advice. Funding and finance are separate questions. The funding research will consider relevant non-school entities rather than reusing school assumptions.

Buyer questions

Aged-care and retirement-village communications FAQs

Which PA or intercom system is best for a retirement village?

Start with the job: general announcements, visitor intercom, retained PA, or clinical resident assistance. These are different scopes. Compare the exact package, Australian support evidence and staff workflow, rather than choosing a universal winning brand. SPON remains conditional until Australian supply/support is verified; ITC is not in the main comparison.

Is an aged-care paging system the same as nurse call?

No. Paging can mean announcements over loudspeakers or private messages to staff devices. Nurse call is a separately specified resident/staff response system, potentially including call points, pendants, alert routing and escalation. A general PA speaker with a microphone is not automatically an equivalent replacement for a specialist nurse-call response system.

Can aged-care announcements be limited to certain wings or times?

The brief can specify which wings, common areas and staff areas receive routine messages. Confirm that the proposed zones and scheduling deliver those rules, then test authorised urgent-message overrides separately. Do not infer clinical suitability from a scheduling feature.

Evidence:[1][8]

Can we keep our existing 100V speakers and upgrade the controls?

Potentially. Interfaces such as Algo 8301 and Axis C8110 connect to suitable analogue audio equipment. Have the installer check the amplifier, wiring, load, condition and coverage. An interface normally feeds an amplifier; it does not directly power a 100V speaker line or create individual-room control within one shared circuit.

Evidence:[8][3]

Does IP paging mean wireless or Wi-Fi speakers?

No. IP describes network communication; many of the compared endpoints use wired Ethernet and Power over Ethernet. Wireless nurse-call equipment is a different design choice. Identify the real cable, switch and power requirements rather than assuming that an IP upgrade needs no wiring.

Evidence:[9][2]

Can residents or staff speak back through a room speaker?

Only where the selected endpoint and control system support two-way audio. Algo documents talkback for its 8188, for example. Specify the microphone, call button, answering location and privacy controls; general facility talkback is not automatically equivalent to clinical nurse call.

Evidence:[9][2]

Can a retirement village use video intercom at gates or building entrances?

Entrance products such as 2N IP Verso 2.0 and Axis I8116-E provide technical starting points. Quote visitor video, reception answering, door release and after-hours routing together. Verify exact local supply and support rather than assuming a product-page example represents your installed design.

Evidence:[6][4]

How much does a retirement-village PA or intercom upgrade cost?

Use the SiteComms calculator for an indicative general PA/intercom range based on areas, infrastructure and optional calling. There is no single per-bed price. The worked example on this page uses the same calculator, not a brand quote. Clinical nurse call, extensive door/access work and certified evacuation systems need separate scopes and quotes.

Can an aged care home or retirement village finance or lease a PA system?

First identify the legal organisation and its authority to enter an arrangement. Then ask a qualified finance provider to assess the asset, installation costs, term and ownership conditions. SiteComms does not make a lender-eligibility or approval decision; the dedicated Australian finance review is still pending.

How do we find a suitable installer or service provider in Australia?

Ask for relevant project experience, exact product support, a coverage design and a demonstration of staff tasks. SiteComms can review your enquiry and reply with suggested providers' public contact details. We do not claim to cover the whole market and do not send your enquiry to the providers we recommend.

Define what the site needs. Then choose the system.

Tell us what needs to happen, what is already installed and your region. The SiteComms team can review the enquiry and reply with the provider or providers we think are most relevant to contact.

Your enquiry stays with SiteComms. Please describe the facilities project without including resident names, medical details or security-sensitive records.

How we reached these recommendations

We matched documented product functions to six defined care/village communications briefs, then checked for an Australian-facing supply or integration route. The options are not ordered as winners; the proposed configuration and local support still need verification. We have not conducted a hands-on group test, measured market share or compared complete competitive tenders.

Manufacturer documents support capability, not universal superiority. Local listings and overseas case studies have their limits labelled. Citations do not establish a SiteComms provider relationship or coverage of the entire market. No business named here is being represented as a partner or endorser merely because it is cited. Clinical nurse call is outside the compared scope. See our editorial policy and commercial disclosure.
